Despite the stories you've heard about pizza being unhealthy, there are ways to make it healthier and tastier. We're not talking about loading your pizza with junk ingredients like processed sugars and additives.
Far from that, we share with you simple ways to make your pizza taste better and still keep it healthy. You might have to make pizza at home for you to experiment and enjoy these recipes.
In case you didn't know, you can have sushi pizza for a change of taste. Bake your pizza dough into flat focaccia, and then leave it to cool. Spread wasabi paste, creating a thin layer as you do it, and then add your various toppings. Mostly, people use chopped ginger and raw seafood like tuna, salmon, or any other sushi. You may also sprinkle other flavourings like eggs, sesame seeds, seaweed flakes, or bonito eggs.
Smoked Salmon pizza
Have you tried smoked salmon pizza before? It's super delicious as well.
For this one, first put a few drops of olive oil on the dough. Next, slice some red onions and spread on the dough. After that, bake the dough until it turns golden brown. Next, top it up with a sour-cream dill sauce.
To make a sour cream-dill sauce, you need:
· 1½ cup sour cream.
· ½ teaspoon sauce.
· 2 tablespoons minced shallots.
· 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill.
· 1 tablespoon lemon juice.
· ½ teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground).
Once you have the dill sauce, arrange slices of your smoked salmon on top of it. To add more flavour, you may sprinkle chopped chives. Now your smoked salmon pizza is ready for serving. Also, you may add a flavour of caviar – a tablespoon or two.
Apple pizza uses fresh apples instead of tomato sauce. It's a creative way to add more fruits to your diet.
The Ingredients for an apple pizza include olive oil, crush cloves of garlic, coarsely chopped spinach, and 1 ½ cups of apples.
To prepare apple pizza, sauté 2 crushed cloves of garlic with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Brush this mixture over your pizza dough.
Next, spread on the dough with the 2 cups of coarsely chopped spinach. After that, spread the cored, peeled, and thinly sliced apples on the dough; about 1½ cups. You're not done yet. Next, evenly spread your pizza with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese blended with 1 cup of crumbled blue gorgonzola. You could top it up with some oregano or basil leaves and bake.
To get a taste of classic Neapolitan pizza, like pizza Margherita, you can always try your own recipe at home. The recipe is simple. You only need to ensure you follow it to the core and bake the dough at super high temperatures (400 degrees).
PS: To get the authentic taste of Naples pizza, go for water-buffalo mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes.
You need the following ingredients for the dough:
Compressed fresh yeast (9 ml).
Warm water (2 cups).
Pastry flour (1 cup).
Unbleached, all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour (6 cups).
Add warm water and yeast into a bowl. Stir until the yeast dissolves. Then, add pastry flour and salt. Mix well before adding the all-purpose flour. Knead the dough until it's smooth, adding the flour a cup at a time. Roll the dough into a ball and leave for a moment. You can cover the dough with a face towel and leave it for a few hours.
Now that you have prepared the dough prepare your toppings. You need:
- 1 large peeled, chopped tomato.
- 1½ cups diced mozzarella.
- fresh basil.
- Sea salt and extra-virgin olive oil.
Now, all that's left is to dress your pizza with the chopped tomatoes, spread a chunk of mozzarella over it, and sprinkle some fresh basil leaves. Before you bake in a hot oven, sprinkle a tablespoon of extra-virgin oil and salt to taste.
Berry pie pizza
I bet you haven't heard of this one unless you are a true pie fanatic. It uses berry fillings as the toppings. And it's good for dessert. You need the following ingredients:
- Blueberries or raspberries (4 cups).
- 2/3 granulated sugar.
- ½ cup of cool water.
- ¼ cornstarch.
Prepare your toppings by mixing your berries with granulated sugar, ¼ cup of water in a saucepan. Leave the mixture to simmer on medium heat. Also, do not stir this mixture. Stirring will mash the berries. Next, stir a mixture of cornstarch with water (1/4 cup) in a bowl. Stir until the mixture is smooth.
From there, add your cornstarch mixture to your hot berries. Let it simmer until the mixture becomes thick and clear
Now, all you need is to fold the dough into a round, thick shape. From there, bake the pizza dough for 10-15 minutes and once it cools, spread your thick berry mixture on its crust.
This pizza is a dessert pizza as well but super-delicious and easy to prepare. Just make sure to pre-bake your crust beforehand, then use the following toppings:
- ¾ cup of brown sugar.
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch.
- 1/3 cup light corn syrup.
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt.
- 1/3 cup of canned coconut milk.
To prepare the caramel:
Mix brown sugar with cornstarch, and then whisk well.
Add the sea salt, coconut meal, and corn syrup – whisk until it becomes smooth.
Simmer this mixture over medium heat for about eight minutes.
Stir the mixture as the caramel thickens.
You can also garnish your pizza crust with toasted coconut, fresh raspberries, sliced bananas, or semisweet chocolate chips.
Tomato pie pizza
After World War 2, pizza eaten in the U.S was popularly known as 'tomato pies'. You can still enjoy this flavour. You only need to structure the pizza in reverse, first laying down the cheese and then the tomatoes. This recipe brings out a thick-biscuit-like crust dressed with sliced whole tomatoes. You need these ingredients:
- Mozzarella cheese (1/2 lb).
- 4-5 sliced fresh tomatoes.
- Grated Parmesan cheese.
- Dried oregano.
- Salt, pepper, and olive oil.
Use Cashew-based Sauce
You can also use the cashew-based sauce in place of packaged cheese, especially if you can't find mozzarella or goat cheese. To make this sauce, you need:
- ½ cup raw unsalted cashews (1/2 cup).
- Nutritional yeast flakes (1/4 cup).
- Granulated onion (1 teaspoon).
- Smoked paprika (1 teaspoon).
- Sea salt (1 teaspoon).
The word out is out there, now. Home-made pizza baked with natural, wholesome ingredients is healthier and tastier. It's nothing compared to junk-food pizza, which is loaded with processed sugars and other additives. By following these simple recipes, pizza might find its way to your dinner table, either as a course meal or a dessert.
