Keto friendly Pizza

Some people are religious followers of keto-diets. They’ll swear by it if they have to. And if you want to change their stance, it will take a lifetime. Not even a slice of pizza can tempt them to sway that stand. Unless the pizza itself is keto-friendly, only then can you be on the same mental plane. It could be a keto diet has some magic formula most people are yet to discover.

Keto diets have been around for some time. And many people following a keto diet have praised it for its effectiveness in treating various ailments and keeping their health in check. It works wonders for the treatment of ailments like Alzheimer, cancer, and other immune-related diseases. Many say it has weight loss benefits, it enhances energy, and it brings mental clarity. Some have confessed that a keto diet helped them keep depression in check and even look younger.

Once you switch to a ketogenic diet, your body changes from burning glucose for energy to running on ketones as the main energy source. When the body starts using ketones as an alternative fuel source, that’s when the keto-benefits start to show. It is not a surprise you might want to try a keto-friendly pizza when on a keto diet. But a keto-friendly pizza isn’t only for those on a keto diet. It’s one way to eat a healthy slice of pizza.

Is pizza keto friendly?

A keto-friendly pizza is a pizza whose crust and toppings contain low-carb, high-protein foods like cheese, eggs, veggies, herbs, and meat.

Here is how to make your pizza, keto-friendly.

The low-carb, gluten-free crust aka the Fathead keto pizza

A keto pizza has a different crust from that of the usual pizza dough. Instead of wheat flour, the crust of a keto pizza uses almond flour, cauliflower flour, or coconut flour - gluten-free and low-carb.

Most people refer to a pizza whose crust is made from a low-carb, high-protein dough as a “Fathead pizza” or “Fathead keto pizza.”

It has a similar texture to that of a real pizza, only that it has high-protein foods in plenty. Such foods include eggs, cream cheese, and mozzarella. So, a fathead pizza is basically a pizza crust that’s keto-friendly. The crust is mostly all cheese, a high-protein food. It’s not only delicious but also it’s easier to make.

To make a low-carb, gluten-free crust, go for Almond flour, coconut flour, or cauliflower flour.

In one serving, a fathead pizza made from almond flour has about:

  • 144 calories.
  • 2g net carb.
  • 8g of protein.

If you go with coconut flour, the crust would have about:

  • 117 calories.
  • 2g net carbs.
  • 7g of protein.

Keto-pizza Toppings

As for the toppings, the main ingredients are high-protein foods. Such foods mainly include eggs and various cheese varieties like cream cheese, cottage cheese, blue cheese, cheddar cheese, feta cheese, or mozzarella. It can also have melted butter.

Besides high-protein foods like cheese and eggs, a keto-pizza can be dressed with various veggies as toppings. Veggies are low in carbohydrates. Here, the possibilities to experiment with are infinite. You can use onions, olives, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, green bell peppers, artichokes, garlic, among others. Apart from veggies, a keto-pizza can be garnished with herbs like oregano, garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, fresh basil leaves, rosemary parsley.

It can have a variety of sauces to add to the depth of the flavour. You can use tomato paste, green pesto, sun-dried tomato pesto, sour cream, or salsa sauce.  As for the non-veggies, it’s common for people to garnish their pizza with pepperoni, ground beef, anchovies, shredded chicken, and bacon, all loaded with proteins and fewer carbohydrates. Vegetarians won’t particularly agree with that statement, but the meat-eaters won’t hear any of it.

So, can you eat pizza on keto?

Of course you can!

All in all, even if you are on a keto diet, you can still enjoy a tasty slice of pizza prepared the keto way. You only have to switch the ingredients used in your ordinary wheat flour pizza with keto, gluten-free and low-carb ingredients for the crust. And then flavour it with keto-friendly foods. Keto pizza is nutritious, flavour rich, and non-soggy – the way some people like it.
